History

Quest For Sorcery was one of the earliest add-ons for The Major BBS. It was written sometime in the first half of 1987 and possibly very late 1986. It came after Fazuul and Quest For Magic, but was likely before Quest of the Alchemists. Scott Brinker was not satisfied with the results, so he quickly began work on Quest For Sorcery II. Quest for Sorcery II evolved into Sorcerer's Isle, being released in 1990.

We know that the game was built on the same source code platform as Fazuul, Quest For Magic, and Quest of the Alchemists. We don't, unfortunately, know much more than that.

When Scott Brinker was asked about these games he said "As I recall Quest for Sorcery didn't stay around long. I wasn't very happy with the game, which was sort of a sequel to Quest For Magic, but... I don't know, it just never really gelled. Shortly after it came out, I wrote Quest for Sorcery II."

The game was discovered in a box of floppies containing several early Moonshae titles including a backup of the Moonshae BBS.

Gameplay

Gameplay within Quest For Sorcery is fairly typical of text "adventure" games (now more commonly called interactive fiction games) like Zork, Colossal Cave, etc; and MUD games, like Dungeon, Rogue, etc. Players issue simple verb-noun command pairs, such as "north", "get object", "mix object1 object2", etc. Players can interact with other players in the game, as well.
