The Labyrinth
History
The Labyrinth is significant in the development of the M. B. Murdock line of software because it may well have been the precursor to the Adventure Writer's Toolkit, and The Legend of Elyth-Gor. In its own right, it was an interesting and useful module that allowed for great configurability. Surprisingly, nobody sold add-on mazes.
Shortly after release, the price of The Labyrinth dropped from $195.00 to $75.00. It was never ported to the DLL format with version 6.0 of The Major BBS.
The Labyrinth is an innovative module for The Major BBS that provides a maze puzzle for your users to solve. Mazes can range from very simple to very complex and can be changed, improved, or updated as you wish. The maze data is stored in a simple text file that you can edit anytime or create new ones from scratch. This permits a maze with 100 rooms to be created in as little as a couple hours.
Mazes can also have text associated with each room, which permits you to create any setting or story line you desire. You may run a haunted house maze one month, and a science fiction one next month. There are separate message displayed to the user when he enters the room and another when he looks around permitting you to create "action".
Gameplay
Gameplay within The Labyrinth is fairly typical of text "adventure" games (now more commonly called interactive fiction games) like Zork, Colossal Cave, etc. Players issue simple verb commands, such as "north", "look", etc. Players can interact with other players in the game, as well.
